We have such an exciting renovation making progress in the Sugarhouse Area of Salt Lake City! It’s been so rewarding to see this one come along. The home was originally built in 1919 – so, in other words, it’s been around almost as long as Salt Lake City itself. I can’t help but imagine how many changes the city has undergone since this building was built. It’s a bit daunting when you think about it. These old buildings deserve lots of respect and care!
That being said, we’ve had the exciting opportunity to update this beauty for last few months now, and she’s finally getting ready to hit the market. It was important to us to preserve the home’s natural quirks and eccentricities – we didn’t want to eliminate its classic, old-SLC style, but we did want to update it and make it attractive to a modern buyer. It’s a bit of a balancing act, but we love the creative challenge remodels always bring. Especially older homes like this one!
It’s always fun to go check on the progress of a project, and we got to take a peek at our Highland Drive baby yesterday. Everything’s coming along so well!
For reference, here’s what the home looked like before we got started:

On the exterior, we decided to preserve the classic brown brick of the chimney while painting the rest of the brick black. It was a bit of a risk, but worth it to give a nod to the home’s original iteration! Painting the attached sunroom white allowed the exterior even more visual interest, and once we add the finishing touches it’ll be all the better!

The funny thing is, this is actually the side of the house. These old homes are so weird in the best way.
Here’s the front, before:

We want to keep the awnings, keep the door, and keep the essence of that intricate railing system. All of the things that make this home an SLC original! When we’re done it’ll be a beautiful blend of the old and the new. It’ll be timeless in its own way, but lively, modern and chic.
Check out how the front porch is coming along. Don’t miss the gold railings (as if you could)!:
We’re updating the inside as well, going for bold patterns and avant-garde lighting – all without overpowering the natural beauty of the rooms. This fireplace was inspired by a previous project of ours, “Step Rock”.

It’s going to be so amazing when it’s done. We can’t wait!
You probably noticed that eye-catching black marble framing the fireplace. We went for similarly bold styles throughout the home, utilizing patterned tile both on the floor and in the kitchen backsplash.
Here’s the bathroom, where we paired the boldly-patterned tile with the same angular, modern light fixtures you’ll see throughout the rest of the home.

In the kitchen, we decided to draw your eye to the backsplash (pardon the iPhone + poorly lit photos if you can):

It’s going to be stunning. We’re so excited to see this one finish coming to life!
Feel free, as always, to let us know if you have questions or comments about the project. We’d love to hear from you!
